Datuk A. Vaithilingam, at 91, stands as a towering figure of selfless leadership, guided by humanity in every field he has touched — from developing sports and fostering inter-racial harmony to dedicating himself to social service. A pioneer in the advancement of the Malaysian people, particularly the Indian community, he has spent a lifetime in service to others. On 12 August, his extraordinary journey was captured in the book VAITHI – A Life of Service, a fitting tribute to a life defined by compassion and dedication.
Born in Singapore, Datuk A. Vaithilingam relocated to Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, during the Japanese occupation, and in 1946, he made Brickfields, Kuala Lumpur, his home. From his school years, he formed lasting friendships and soon found himself actively engaged in community service.
Kathirasen Auduayappan, author of the 350-page book VAITHI – A Life of Service, said he embarked on the project at the urging of Vaithilingam’s family, with the goal of preserving his countless contributions and remarkable life story in print. Describing him as a good and noble man, Kathirasen also voiced his admiration for Datuk Vaithilingam’s exceptional memory.
Meanwhile, Vaithilingam noted that in his more than 75 years of service to the people, he had given equal importance to every organisation he was involved with, ensuring that all such efforts effectively reached and benefited the community.

Several of Vaithilingam’s friends remarked that, as the former president of the Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Taoism (MCCBCHST), he has been a trusted advisor and, at times, a source of personal inspiration to them in many ways.
“I remember him as someone deeply committed to building an inclusive society and fostering harmony among different faiths. His place within the MCCBCHST family speaks volumes. I have also been actively involved in promoting interfaith relations, and in many ways, I have drawn inspiration from him,” said a friend of Dato A. Vaithilingam’s son.
“He is an exceptionally determined person. If I ever missed a training session, he would grow concerned. More than that, he is an inspiring figure — a good and caring man who never fails to motivate me. On days when our enthusiasm wanes, he is the one who lifts our spirits,” said Muhammad Khairul Amir Shaufi, physiotherapist to Dato A. Vaithilingam.
On 12 August in Kuala Lumpur, the book VAITHI – A Life of Service was officially launched by Dato P. Sagathevan, Chief Executive Officer of the National Land Finance Cooperative Society. The occasion drew over 200 attendees, including several distinguished guests.
The launch of VAITHI – A Life of Service not only celebrates Datuk A. Vaithilingam’s extraordinary journey but also stands as a testament to a life devoted to compassion, unity, and the betterment of society. Through his unwavering commitment to service, he has touched countless lives, inspired generations, and strengthened the bonds between communities. At 91, his legacy continues to shine as a guiding light — reminding us that true leadership is rooted in humanity and selflessness.
