Sabah’s tourism industry received a major boost as Batik Air officially launched its inaugural direct service between Incheon International Airport, Seoul, and Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). The new thrice-weekly route strengthens connectivity between East Malaysia and South Korea, one of Sabah’s most important tourism markets, while further positioning Kota Kinabalu as a key regional getaway.

A Warm Sabah Welcome

The arrival of the first flight on 12 September was celebrated with a traditional Sabah-style reception. The aircraft was greeted with a ceremonial water salute, and passengers were welcomed with traditional bead garland presented by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB). A vibrant cultural troupe showcased local music and dance, adding colour and energy to the celebration.

The ceremony was attended by STB Deputy CEO Ms.Tay Shu Lan, Tourism Malaysia Deputy Director General (Promotion II) Mr.Lee Thai Hung, Tourism Malaysia Sabah Director Ms.Haryanty Abu Bakar, as well as airport officials and industry stakeholders.

Growing Korean Market

South Korea has long been one of Sabah’s fastest-growing international markets. From January to July 2025 alone, Sabah recorded nearly 103, 060 arrivals from South Korea, while 2024 saw a total of 192,059 visitors. With Batik Air’s direct flights, industry key players anticipate further growth, thanks to enhanced accessibility and reduced travel time.

Sabah Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Environment Datuk Seri Christina Liew welcomed the development, describing it as a ‘significant boost’ for the state’s tourism sector. “With this addition, the total weekly flight connections from Seoul to Kota Kinabalu have increased from 25 to 28 flights weekly. This enhanced connectivity strengthens our position as a preferred destination for South Korean traveller, it is a testament to the strong and growing demand from this key market We are confident this route will be a success, bringing more visitors to experience our unique culture and breathtaking natural beauty”.

A Step Towards Visit Malaysia 2026

Batik Air CEO Datuk Chandran Rama Muthy highlighted the route as part of the airline’s network expansion strategy. “This new service marks an exciting step in Batik Air’s ongoing network growth, particularly in connecting East Malaysia to key cities across Asia. South Korea has long been an important market for Kota Kinabalu, and we are confident that this direct link will create more opportunities for cultural exchange, tourism growth, and business collaboration,” he said, adding that the service also supports Malaysia’s preparation for Visit Malaysia Year 2026.

Tourism Malaysia’s Lee Thai Hung echoed this, noting that the route is supported under the agency’s International and Charter Flight Matching Grant (GSPC) programme, aimed at strengthening Malaysia’s air connectivity.

Natural and Cultural Appeal

For South Korean visitors, Kota Kinabalu offers a rich blend of nature and culture, from pristine tropical islands and lush rainforest to the majestic Mount Kinabalu and diverse marine life. The city’s eco-tourism attractions, diving spots, culinary experiences, and cultural festivals continue to draw travellers seeking both adventure and relaxation.

Industry stakeholders expect the new service to boost hotel occupancy, dining, retail spending, guided tours, and adventure activities, generating long-term economic benefits for Sabah. The move also aligns with the state’s broader vision to diversify its tourism base and sustain growth beyond 2025.
