Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd is preparing to launch a real-time train crowd monitoring system designed to ease congestion and improve the commuting experience for over one million daily passengers on the Klang Valley rail networks.
The new system will provide live data showing crowd density in each train coach before arrival, allowing passengers to identify which sections are less crowded and position themselves more efficiently at the platform. This is expected to reduce congestion at specific doors and encourage a smoother boarding process.
In addition to crowd monitoring, Rapid Rail is also upgrading its existing closed-circuit television (CCTV) surveillance to an artificial intelligence (AI) based system across all its facilities. The AI-enabled technology will be capable of detecting suspicious behavior, identifying usage of women-only coaches, and flagging potentially dangerous objects such as weapons.

These safety measures are particularly significant as women make up around 60% of Rapid Rail’s daily ridership. Women-only coaches have already been introduced on the MRT Kajang and Putrajaya lines, as well as the Ampang and Sri Petaling LRT lines, and the AI upgrade is intended to further enhance safety and comfort.
Meanwhile, Rapid Rail clarified that any fate adjustments fall under the Ministry of Transport’s jurisdiction. At present, there are no directives for changes, ensuring that fares remain unchanged. By combining crowd management with advanced safety features, Rapid Rail aims to set a higher standard for public transport in Kuala Lumpur, reinforcing its commitment to reliable, efficient and commuter-focused service.
