To nurture badminton talent among Tamil school students, the Brickfields Badminton Club organised an under-12 inter-school tournament featuring 224 students from 14 Tamil schools in the Federal Territory.

Held at the DBKL Sports Arena in Cheras, the competition crowned Edinburgh Tamil School as champions in the boys’ category, while Sikambut Tamil School emerged winners in the girls’ category.

Club president and organising committee chairman, Segaran Velayudham, said that although this was the first such tournament for Tamil schools in the Federal Territory, it received tremendous support at school level.

“We initially thought the standard of play would be modest since the participants are under 12, but the students’ energy and skills surprised us,” he said, adding that the club hopes to continue organising the event annually.

Organising member Saravanakumar Perumal said the initiative has sparked new enthusiasm among the students.

“This is the first badminton competition exclusively for Tamil schools. The students participated with great zeal and showcased their abilities after proper training,” he explained.

Many students shared that the tournament was a refreshing and exciting experience compared to regular school matches.

In the boys’ category, Vivekananda Tamil School secured second place, followed by Sikambut Tamil School in third and Sentul Tamil School in fourth.

In the girls’ category, Tambusamy Tamil School came second, Edinburgh Tamil School third, and Jalan Pletchor Tamil School fourth.
