The Communications Ministry plans to propose the establishment of a National Music Day as an annual celebration to honour the contributions and creativity of Malaysian musicians.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the proposal would be tabled to the Cabinet after internal discussions within the ministry, following the completion of a recent music industry study conducted with MyCreative Ventures.
“The proposal will be submitted to the Cabinet and if agreed upon by the Prime Minister, its implementation will be reviewed. I see the need for us to celebrate the talents and contributions of local musicians through a special observance such as National Music Day,” said Datuk Fahmi.

He said the study identified several key challenges within the local music industry including the lack of dedicated legal framework to regulate and protect music professionals and creative enterprises.
“We found that many creative sectors, especially music, still lack dedicated legislation. Since last year, I have requested MyCreative Ventures and the Communications Ministry to examine the feasibility of introducing a specific act for the music industry. The completed study outlines the direction for such legislation,” he said.
According to him, the completed study outlines the future direction for potential legislation, which would aim to strengthen the structure, sustainability and protection of the country’s music ecosystem.
On related note, Datuk Fahmi said RIUH X ASEAN 2025, held in conjunction with the 47th ASEAN Summit, featured performances from local and regional artists, alongside showcases of Malaysian fashion and culinary brand.
He added that RIUH has grown into a key platform in promoting Malaysia’s creative economy, or what is know as orang economy, by elevating local talents and products to both regional and global markets.
