Tamil cinema is set for a grand reunion as two of it’s most iconic legends, Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth come together once again. Kamal Haasan’s Raajkamal Films International will produce Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Thalaivar 173, directed by Sundar C, with a Pongal 2027 release on the cards.
The announcement was made yesterday, with Kamal sharing the news on his social handles. The collaboration marks a milestone moment for Tamil cinema, bringing together two veterans whose careers have shaped the industry for over five decades.
In a statement, Raajkamal Films International described the project as a celebration of their long-standing friendship and artistic journey.
“This landmark collaboration not only unites two towering forces of Indian cinema but also celebrates five decades of friendship and brotherhood between Superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan.”

A Reunion Decades in the Making
This project marks the first time in over 40 years that Kamal Haasan and Rajinikanth will officially collaborate. While it has yet to be confirmed if they will share screen space, the announcement has sparked widespread excitement among fans.
The duo last appeared together in Thillu Mullu (1981) in Tamil and Geraftaar (1985) in Hindi. Their cinematic partnership, however dates back to Apoorva Raagangal (1975), Rajinikanth’s debut film directed by K Balachander, where Kamal played the lead role. The two went on to act in classics such as Moondru Mudichu, Pathinaru Vayathinile, Ilamai Oonjal Aadukirathu, Thappu Thalangal, Aval Appadithaan and Ninaithale Inikkum.
The reunion comes after Rajinikanth publicly expressed interest in working with Kamal again during the Coolie audio launch earlier this year. Kamal later confirmed the collaboration at a separate event, cementing what fans have long hoped for the return of Tamil cinema’s golden duo.
Sundar C at the Helm
Thalaivar 173 will be helmed by Sundar C, marking his second collaboration with Rajinikanth after the 1997 hit Arunachalam. He also worked with Kamal in Anbe Sivam (2003), a cult classic praised for its emotional storytelling and social themes.

The director is currently working on Mookuthi Amman 2, starring Nayanthara, and is expected to begin production on Thalaivar 173 once his current commitments conclude.
While details about the cast and crew have yet to be announced, the combination of Rajinikanth’s on-screen charisma, Kamal’s creative vision, and Sundar C’s commercial storytelling style has already made the film one of the most anticipated Tamil releases in recent years.
A Historic Collaboration
Beyond it’s cinematic significance, Thalaivar 173 carries deep symbolic weight. The project brings together not just two of Tamil cinema’s greatest icons but also lifelong friends whose careers have intertwined since their early days under mentor K Balachander.

Produced by Kamal Haasan and R Mahendran under Raajkamal Films International and distributed by Red Giant Movies, the film marks the 44th year of Kamal’s production banner, adding yet another milestone to it’s legacy.
As Tamil cinema evolves with new voices, and technologies, Thalaivar 173 promises to bridge the past and the present, a celebration of enduring friendship, artistry, and the timeless appear of two legends who continue to define Indian cinema.
