The Butterworth Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) station is set for a major RM30 million facelift as part of efforts to transform Penang Sentral into Seberang Perai’s main public transport hub, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced today.
The upgrade, which falls under the Fifth Rolling Plan (RP5) of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), is aimed at integrating various modes of transport, KTM, Electric Train Service (ETS), commuter lines, ferry services and the upcoming Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT), under one connected terminal at Penang Sentral.
“All three modes of transportation will be integrated, making Penang Sentral a public transportation hub in Seberang Perai. This is an Integrated Public Transport Terminal concept that connects various modes at one place. So, development is not just confined to the island. There is balanced development between the island and Seberang Perai. This will surely turn it into a focal area, and we are confident it can become the pulse of development for the surrounding area.”
Loke added that contractor appointments are expected to take place next month with construction beginning soon after.

Part of a Broader Development Vision
The KTMB station upgrade is among several large-scale infrastructure projects announced for Penang, including the expansion of the Penang International (LTAPP) and it’s air cargo terminal, as well as the RM16 billion Mutiara Line LRT.
Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) in collaboration with the Penang state government will expand the Bayan Lepas cargo terminal, doubling it’s capacity from three to six aircraft parking bays. Additionally, MAHB and the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) will jointly develop a largest logistic site in Batu Maung to attract international logistic operators.

Mutiara Line: Penang’s First LRT System
The upcoming 29.5 kilometer Mutiara Line LRT, the first outside the Klang Valley, will feature 21 stations and extend connectivity to Seberang Perai following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s vision for a cross-channel alignment.
Estimated to cost RM16 billion, the LRT project is expected to serve as a major catalyst for Penang’s transport and urban growth.
Driving Penang’s Industrial and Regional Growth
Loke emphasized that the combination of the LRT network, airport, and cargo terminal expansion and the upgraded Butterworth KTMB station will collectively fuel Penang’s long-term development.
Together, these transport initiatives are poised to position Penang Sentral as the northern region’s central getaway, enhancing connectivity for both commuters and industries while supporting balanced development between Penang Island and Seberang Perai.
