Beginning January 1, 2026, all visitors to Malaysia’s marine parks will be required to take their rubbish back with them. The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (KPKM) announced this “Take Your Rubbish Home” campaign as part of a national effort to combat pollution, particularly plastic waste, which poses a significant threat to coral reefs, marine life, and even human health.
This announcement was made during a meeting of the National Advisory Council of Marine Parks and Marine Reserves, with strong support from state governments and environmental NGOs.
The new campaign will be implemented in several marine parks, including Redang and Perhentian Islands in Terengganu, Payar Island in Kedah, Tinggi Island in Johor, and Rusukan Kecil Island in Labuan. Boat operators, dive centers, tour guides, local communities, and the tourism industry are all encouraged to support and actively participate in this campaign.
KPKM Secretary-General Datuk Seri Isham Ishak emphasized the urgency of the issue:
“Plastic pollution not only threatens marine life but also directly affects the food chain and public well-being. With support from all parties, conservation efforts can be strengthened to ensure Malaysia’s marine parks remain preserved for future generations.”
Through the “Take Your Rubbish Home” campaign, KPKM aims to enhance public awareness about the dangers of littering and encourage collective action.
