Dr. Jayaprakash Muralitharan has made history as Malaysia’s first atmospheric scientist to graduate from the University of Cambridge, earning a PhD in Atmospheric Science (Chemistry).
Growing up in a modest small-town community, Jayaprakash once considered attending Cambridge a distant dream. However, with encouragement from his father and his unwavering determination, he defied expectations.
Dr. Jayaprakash completed his PhD in Atmospheric Science (Chemistry) at Cambridge. Prior to that, he earned a master’s degree in Sustainable Development and Environmental Studies from the University of Strathclyde and an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

After returning to Malaysia, he led the development of the country’s first AI-based haze prediction proof-of-concept tool. This system integrates data streams from various governmental bodies, machine learning expertise from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and environmental data infrastructure managed by the Ministry of Environment Malaysia.
His work has been recognized by atmospheric experts in Malaysia for bridging the gap between science and policy, and for positioning the nation as a potential leader in AI-driven haze forecasting.
Dr. Jayaprakash now aims to channel his expertise in coding, modeling, and data analysis into national environmental policy, particularly in relation to AI-based management systems.
