Kaarthigai Deepam is one of the most auspicious occasions in the Tamil calendar. On this day, lamps are lit in almost every corner of the home, which is believed to be a gesture to bring peace, prosperity and protection to the household.

Spiritually, the festival is rich in symbolism. The wick in the lamp is said to represent our ego and the oil that fuels the lamp represents our innate nature or worldly tendencies. When the lamp is lit, the flame symbolizes spiritual knowledge and clarity, a force burns away ego and ignorance. Lighting the lamps stands for the triumph of good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Many believe the light protects the home and family from negative energies and attracts blessings and well-being.

2) Decorating with Kolam and Festive Touches

Once the home is clean, many draw beautiful kolams at the entrances often using rice flour paster. They may akso decorate their house with mago leaves or other floral elements at doorways to give the auspicious festive vibes.

3) Arranging and Lighting the Lamps

Normally, clay or brass lamps are used which are filled with oil and cotton wick are laced in the lamp as well. Then, lamps are placed at entrances, windows, n]balconies and poojai areas ensuring the warmth of light spreads across the home.

As traditions change over time, decorative lamps come in many shapes, sizes, and colors that reflect personal and cultural styles. However, their core purpose remains the same: to bring warmth, hope, and a sense of purity into homes. This festival will brighten not only homes but also temples, lighting them up with a stunning display of lamps that shine brighter than ever, creating a magical atmosphere all around.
