Prominent Singapore activist lawyer M. Ravi, known for his outspoken advocacy and controversial legal battles, was found dead in the early hours of 24th December, with police classifying the case as an unnatural death. Investigations are ongoing.
Ravi, whose full name is Ravi Madasamy, was 56. Widely recognized in Singapore’s legal community for his fearless courtroom presence and human rights activism, his sudden passing has sparked shock, sadness, and reflection among peers who remembered him as both a complex figure and a passionate advocate.
Lawyer Eugene Thuraisingam, who previously represented him in cases, paid tribute, saying Ravi “had struggles but was always true to the cause he fought with all his heart”, noting his significant influence in shaping aspects of constitutional law in Singapore.
Prominent criminal lawyer Shashi Nathan echoed the sentiment, describing Ravi as ‘fearless in his advocacy’ and someone who consistently pushed boundaries, often challenging convention in the legal system. Ravi’s career spanned more than two decades. After graduating with a law degree in England and earlier completing a Bachelor of Arts at the National University of Singapore, he began practising in 1997. Throughout his career, however, Ravi also faced a series of disciplinary actions and professional suspensions. His final suspension, the maximum five-year penalty, came following what the courts ruled were baseless allegations made against Singapore’s legal institutions.
Beyond the courtroom, Ravi’s personal journey was marked by difficult struggles, including a bipolar disorder diagnosis in 2006, and a challenging family background that he spoke about openly. Despite this, he remained deeply committed to causes he believed in, particularly capital punishment and human rights issues.
As the legal fraternity processes his passing, many say Ravi leaves behind a legacy of bold advocacy, spirited challenge, and undeniable impact on Singapore’s legal landscape.
