An estimated 2.2 million vehicles are expected to enter Penang in conjunction with the Christmas celebrations this Thursday, prompting authorities to prepare for heavy traffic congestion across the state. A 50 per cent toll discount will be implemented on Christmas Day to facilitate smoother travel for road users.

Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said congestion is expected on both the First Penang Bridge and the Second Penang Bridge due to the high volume of vehicles entering the island during the festive period. In response, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) have launched Ops Lancar, with increased enforcement and monitoring along state and federal highways to ensure traffic flows smoothly.

Meanwhile, the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) in collaboration with Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) has strengthened the presence of its personnel through regular patrols, particularly in tourist hotspots, to maintain public safety and order amid the influx of visitors.

Datuk Azizee also advised motorists to plan their journeys in advance, remain alert while driving, and be cautious of possible heavy rainfall that could affect road conditions during the festive season.
