Essential festive goods across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have remained stable and affordable this Christmas season, thanks to the enforcement of the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme (SHMMP) by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN).

A survey conducted at supermarkets in Subang Jaya and Puchong found that most consumers were satisfied with current pricing, noting that essential items showed little to no increase, with some even recording price drops.

“Prices are fine, some have dropped. It’s not expensive,” said shopper Parameswari, while another consumer, Jane, shared that prices have remained consistent compared to normal days. Regular shopper Azman Ibrahim said the initiative particularly benefits lower-oncome groups. “Even during Christmas, prices remain controlled. This really helps the B40 groups,” he said.
Others echoed the same confidence, highlighting the rice, vegetables, poultry and fresh produce remain reasonable priced. Restaurant owner Kesavan noted not just affordability, but quality as well, ‘saying’, “Some prices have even gone down. “Shoppers were encouraged to remain proactive by reporting any price violations through KPDN’s mobile platform.

Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd ALi earlier confirmed that the Christmas SHMMP would run from 23rd December to 27th December, covering 14 essentials goods. These include lamb with bones, round cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, red chillies, green bell peppers, potatoes, chickens wings, onions, and selected livestock in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.

He said the five-day implementation period strikes a balance between ensuring consumers enjoy reasonable prices while not overly burdening traders. The scheme is enforced under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act (AHKAP) 2011.

The SHMMP aims to protect consumers from unreasonable price hikes, maintain market stability, and ensure Malaysians can celebrate Christmas with peace of mind.
