In a landmark moment for India’s creative landscape, Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman has officially launched the Naga International Studio in Kohima, Nagaland, a state celebrated for it’s extraordinary musical heritage and deeply rooted artistic identity.
The launch was officiated alongside Nagaland Chief Minister Dr.Neiphiu Rio, who welcomed AR Rahman to his village, Toupheme, and expressed heartfelt appreciation for bringing such a visionary project to the Northeast. The Chief Minister said the initiative reflected AR Rahman’s genuine respect, affection and belief in the artistic potential of the people of Nagaland, assuring full government support for the project.
“This is a meaningful step that reflects our shared commitment to nurturing creativity, innovation, and supporting creative talent. I wish this initiative growth, excellence, and impact, Dr. Rio said, adding that the project will play a pivotal role in strengthening the regions cultural and creative economy.

A Creative Space Designed for World-Class Talent
The Naga International Studio will feature state-of-the-art music production and recording facilities, a world-class performance auditorium, and comprehensive creative infrastructure designed to support musicians, producers and artists at every level. Beyond a studio, it aims to become a powerful creative hub, nurturing local talent, enabling collaboration, and opening doors for artists from Nagaland and beyond.
Expressing gratitude for the warmth and support received, AR Rahman said Nagaland possess a unique musical spirit unlike everyone else.

“Nagaland has a rare musical soul which is honest, original, and deeply rooted in its culture. The Naga International Studio is envisioned as a space where this heritage can meet world class creativity, allowing young artists from the region to collaborate, experiment, and create music that resonates not just nationally, but globally. I am grateful to Chief Minister Dr Neiphiu Rio, the Government of Nagaland and TAFMA for their vision and support in making this dream possible,” AR Rahman shared.
AR Rahman also unveiled the trailer of “Headhunting to Beatboxing”, a documentary he produced and Rohit Gupta directed, which explores Nagaland’s evolving creative identity and it’s powerful musical renaissance.

With the establishment of the Naga International Studio, Nagaland is poised to strengthen it’s place on the global music map. More than just infrastructure, the project symbolises opportunity, empowerment, cultural pride and international visibility for the region’s artists.
As the studio begins it’s journey, it stands as a testament to collaboration between artistic vision and government support, and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for music and creativity in Nagaland and the Northeast.
