The much‑anticipated Tamil film Thalaivar 173, starring Superstar Rajinikanth, has found a new director. Cibi Chakaravarthi will now helm the project after Sundar C exited due to unforeseen circumstances, according to an official announcement by the production banner Raaj Kamal Films International.
Cibi, who gained acclaim for directing Don starring Sivakarthikeyan, expressed excitement about joining the project. In a statement, he described it as a dream come true, sharing that as a fan, he had long admired Rajinikanth and now looks forward to directing him on screen.
The film, which has already generated widespread attention, is slated for a Pongal 2027 release. Music will be composed by Anirudh Ravichandran, adding to the anticipation.
Sundar C had originally been attached to the project when it was announced in late 2025, but stepped down shortly after. Sources suggest the exit was due to unavoidable circumstances, though reports of creative differences circulated in industry circles.
Kamal Haasan, a producer on the film, emphasized that the priority remains delivering a story that meets Rajinikanth’s creative vision. The collaboration of these two legendary actors has sparked immense excitement in the Tamil film community, making Thalaivar 173 one of the most anticipated films in recent times.
