Reeya Kaur Thandal, a first-year law student, was critically injured when an air-conditioning compressor unit exploded during maintenance work on Monday morning at the university’s Bukit Damansara campus. The blast also claimed the life of a 24-year-old industrial trainee and injured several others, some seriously. Witnesses reported hearing a loud bang and seeing debris scatter across the corridor and nearby classrooms, prompting a swift evacuation of students and staff.
Reeya suffered multiple skull fractures and brain bleeding and was immediately rushed to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, where she remains under intensive care. Doctors have described her condition as critical but stable, emphasizing that she requires continuous monitoring. Other injured victims, including staff and fellow students, have either been discharged or are receiving follow-up treatment.
In the midst of the tragedy, Reeya’s parents have expressed deep gratitude for the flood of public support. Her father said, “Thank you to everyone for the continuous prayers. My baby girl has always been a fighter, and she will get through this.” He urged Malaysians to remain positive and keep Reeya in their thoughts during her recovery.

The mother of the 24 year old intern who lost his life reached out to Reeya’s family, offering prayers and emotional support despite her own grief. She said she hoped Reeya would recover soon and that God would give strength to all affected by the incident, highlighting a moment of solidarity amidst the tragedy.
HELP University has confirmed that it is cooperating fully with authorities as investigations continue to determine the cause of the explosion. Authorities are working to establish a detailed timeline of events leading up to the incident. In addition, safety protocols and maintenance procedures across the campus are expected to be reviewed to prevent any recurrence of such accidents.
The tragedy has underscored the importance of rigorous safety inspections and maintenance procedures in educational institutions, with experts highlighting the need for stricter oversight of equipment and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the university community continues to rally around the victims, offering support and hope in these difficult times.
