Thai Krithigai, observed this year on 27 January 2026, is considered especially auspicious as it falls on a Tuesday, a sacred day for Lord Murugan. As the Hindu community prepares for Thaipusam, which is just a few days away, it is equally meaningful to understand the spiritual importance of Thai Krithigai, a day deeply rooted in devotion and inner reflection.
In 2026, Thai Krithigai holds added significance because Tuesday is associated with Lord Murugan, who embodies courage, discipline, and warrior energy. When Thai Krithigai coincides with this sacred day, devotees believe it becomes especially auspicious, with Lord Murugan’s blessings felt more profoundly. On this day, devotees light lamps, offer flowers, fruits, and milk, chant Murugan mantras, and visit Murugan temples or pray at home, seeking strength, protection, and spiritual clarity.
What Is Thai Krithigai?
Krithigai is a nakshatra (star) that appears every month. However, Krithigai occurring in the Tamil month of Thai is regarded as the most auspicious due to its strong association with Lord Murugan. Thai Krithigai is a sacred Tamil Hindu observance dedicated to Lord Murugan, celebrated when the moon aligns with the Krithigai nakshatra during the month of Thai.
According to Hindu mythology, Lord Murugan was nurtured by the six Krittika sisters, which is why the Krithigai star holds deep spiritual significance in his worship. Thai Krithigai symbolises divine birth, protection, spiritual awakening, and the triumph of light over darkness.
Difference Between Thaipusam and Thai Krithigai
While both festivals are dedicated to Lord Murugan and observed during the Tamil month of Thai, their focus and practices differ.
Thai Krithigai
Thai Krithigai is observed on the day Krithigai nakshatra appears in the month of Thai. The rituals are simple and devotional, focusing on prayers and pooja. Devotees light lamps, chant hymns, and offer flowers and fruits to Lord Murugan, emphasising inner peace, faith, and spiritual growth.
Thaipusam
Thaipusam is celebrated on the full moon day (Pournami) in the Tamil month of Thai, when the Pusam (Pushya) star is at its peak. The festival commemorates the day Goddess Parvati bestowed the Vel upon Lord Murugan to defeat evil. Devotees observe vows through acts of penance such as carrying paal kudam and kavadi, symbolising surrender, gratitude, and the removal of obstacles.
The Significance of the Tamil Month of Thai
The Tamil month of Thai is widely regarded as a month of renewal and auspicious beginnings. It is believed that new opportunities and positive changes begin during this period, reflected in the saying, “Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum,” meaning when the month of Thai is born, new paths open. For many, this month represents hope, prosperity, and spiritual progress.
As devotees celebrate Thai Krithigai this year, let it be a reminder of the timeless wisdom, courage, and guidance that Lord Murugan brings into our lives. Lighting lamps, offering prayers, and seeking his blessings on this auspicious day not only honors tradition but also inspires inner strength, clarity, and devotion. May this Thai Krithigai bring peace, prosperity, and new beginnings to all who celebrate.
