The Ministry of Education (MOE) has assured reserve teacher candidates that their chances of entering the education service will not be affected by the upcoming recruitment of 20,000 new teachers nationwide. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said candidates who have already passed interviews and are currently placed under the reserve category should remain confident, as opportunities for absorption into the system remain strong.
“Candidates who are categorised as reserve need not worry. Their prospects are still bright, and will depend on placement requirements, whether in primary or secondary schools and across various teaching options,” he said.
Recruitment Aligned with National Education Reforms
Wong was responding to concerns raised following the announcement of a large-scale recruitment of Education Service Officers (PPP) on a contract basis beginning this March.
Education director-general Dr Mohd Azam Ahmad previously stated that applications for 20,000 DG9-grade teachers under the Contract of Service (CoS) scheme will open from 2nd March to 20th March. The recruitment forms part of the ministry’s early preparations for the Malaysia Education Blueprint (MEB) 2026-2035.
Primary Schools Prioritised Amid Double Cohort Concerns
According to Wong, the recruitment will focus mainly on primary schools to accommodate the anticipated increase in Year One enrolment next year, following the voluntary enrolment of six-year-old children.

He noted that the ministry is preparing for a possible double cohort situation, which would require additional teaching staff to ensure learning quality is maintained.
Digital Empowerment for Tamil Schools
In a move highlighting continued support for Tamil education, Wong announced that 45 Tamil primary schools (SJKTs) in Negeri Sembilan have each received an interactive smartboard, with a total allocation of RM540,000.

The initiative was implemented through the Malaysian Indian Community Transformation Unit (MITRA) and is aimed at modernising classroom learning while enhancing digital literacy among students.
Strengthening Inclusivity across School Streams
Wong said the introduction of interactive smartboards is expected to create a more engaging learning environment and ensure Tamil schools are not left behind in the national push towards digital education.
The announcement was made during the handover ceremony of Information and Communication Technology equipment, reflecting MOE’s broader commitment to inclusive and equitable education development across all school streams.
