Enhancing fund disbursement mechanisms and raising the quality of local content are among the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia’s (FINAS) key priorities this year, as part of broader efforts to strengthen the country’s creative industry.
FINAS chairman Datuk Hans Isaac said the agency has set ambitious targets for 2026, emphasising the need to establish high standards from the outset.
“If we achieve 70 to 80 percent of our targets, that would already be considered good, but we need to set a high standards from the outset,” he said during a press conference after the Ceria Ramadan and Chinese New Year 2026 programme.
Ensuring Prudent Use of Public Funds
Hans highlighted that improving fund disbursement mechanisms is a crucial step to ensure more industry players are given opportunities, while also safeguarding the prudent use of public funds and ensuring they translate into high-quality content.
RM10 Million Allocated Under Budget 2026
Under Budget 2026, the government has allocated RM10 Million in incentive grants for local and international film producers. The allocation includes RM10 million for the production of nation-building content, aimed at strengthening national identity through creative media.
The funding is expected to support content that not only reflects Malaysian stories and values, but also meets international benchmarks in quality and production standards.
Review of National Film Policy
Hans said FINAS is also prioritising efforts to review and update the national film policy, ensuring it remains relevant amid evolving trends and developments within the creative industry.
In addition, FINAS is in discussion with cinema operators to improve existing structures and processes with the aim of ensuring fairer screening opportunities for local films in the domestic market.
Boosting Employment Through International Productions
Commenting on international investment, Hans said attracting foreign production remains a key priority, given it’s direct impact on employment opportunities within Malaysia’s creative sector.
With a renewed focus on funding efficiency, policy reform and content excellence, FINAS aims to position Malaysia’s creative industry for sustainable growth, global competitiveness, and greater opportunities for local talent.
