India made a historic mark at the BAFTA Awards 2026, as Boong became the first Indian film to win in the Best Children and Family Film category. The win is particularly significant as Boong was the sole Indian nominee at this year’s ceremony, underscoring it’s global resonance and storytelling power.
The announcement was made by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts on it’s officially platforms, confirming a landmark moment for regional Indian cinema on one of the world’s most prestigious film stages.
A Debut that Travelled the World
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong is a Manipuri-language debut feature produced by Farhan Akhtar, Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, Ritesh Sidhwani and Shujaat Saudagar. The film stars Gugun Kipgen and Bala Hijam in lead roles.
Farhan Akhtar was present at the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of the team. Boong triumphed over major international contenders including Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootopia 2.
A Tender Story Rooted in Innocence
Set in the valley of Manipur, Boong follows the journey of a young boy who wants to surprise his mother with what he believes to be the most meaningful gift, bringing his father back home. What begins as an innocent search slowly unfolds into a history of loss, resilience, and emotional renewal, culminating in an unexpected new beginning.

Festival Acclaim and Global Recognition
Before it’s BAFTA success, Boong enjoyed a celebrated festival run. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival 2024 in the Discovery section and went on to screen at the Warsaw International Film Festival 2024, MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024, the International Film Festival of India, and the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025.

A Star-Studded BAFTA Night
The 79th British Academy Film Awards were held at London’s Royal Festive Hall, with Indian cinema also represented by Alia Bhatt, who presented an award at the ceremony. With Boong’s historic win, Indian cinema, particularly voices from it’s regional landscapes, has once again proven that intimate, heartfelt stories can transcend borders and resonate powerfully on the world stage.
