The Kelana Jaya LRT line will be bolstered with 26 new train sets by 2028 as part of efforts to improve reliability and address recent service description, said the Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the new trains are expected to stabilize the ageing Bombardier 818 series currently in service, noting that the final batch of previously ordered addition train sets entered service last year. The latest procurement is aimed at strengthening fleet resilience and reducing breakdowns.
The new train will be supplied by China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation, the world’s largest rolling stock manufacturer, which operates a plant in Batu Gajah, Perak.
Earlier this week, Anthony Loke instructed Prasarana Malaysia Bhd to explain the disruption on the Kelana Jaya line since the start of Ramadan and to present measures to prevent a recurrence. Among the steps outlined were early procurement of spare parts and more proactive maintenance planning.
Anthony Loke stressed that maintenance standards must not be compromised and called for clearer communication with passengers so operational issues do no overshadow improvements made in recent years.
The purchase of the 26 new trains is funded under a RM1 billion allocation in the 2026 federal budget.
