If you are looking for a film that makes you laugh out loud while gently reminding you to reflect on women’s independence, Thaai Kizhavi is that film. Directed by debutant Sivakumar Murugesan and produced by Sivakarthikeyan Productions, this women-centric entertainer strikes a fine balance between humour and social commentary.

A Powerful Central Performance

The story revolves around Pavunthaayi, played brilliantly by Radikaa Sarathkumar. Pavunthaayi is a strong-willed, outspoken elderly woman who commands both fear and respect in her town,  including from her own sons. Her stern personality and unapologetic nature make her a force to be reckoned with.

However, when she falls ill, her sons’ sudden desperation to “save” her appears less about affection and more about uncovering details of her hidden wealth. What unfolds from there is a series of chaotic, comedic, and thought-provoking events that keep audiences thoroughly engaged. The conflicts, emotional turns, and unexpected revelations make the film an entertaining watch from start to finish.

A Perfect Cast That Elevates the Story

The true scene-stealer of Thaai Kizhavi is undoubtedly Radikaa Sarathkumar. As Pavunthaayi, she commands the screen with remarkable ease and authority. Her performance is layered, powerful, and deeply engaging, from her commanding dialogue delivery to her subtle emotional expressions. Casting Radikaa Sarathkumar as Pavunthaayi is not just a bold decision, but an exceptionally intelligent one. It is a role that perfectly complements her calibre as an actress, and one that audiences will continue to talk about for years to come.

The supporting cast including Singampuli, Aruldoss, Bala Saravanan, Munishkanth, Raichal Rebecca and Muthukumar, deliver commendable performances. Each actor fits naturally into their role, ensuring that the humour never feels forced. The dialogues are sharp and witty, generating consistent laughter while subtly delivering meaningful messages. The audience remains hooked, constantly anticipating what twist will unfold next. The film’s strength lies in its ability to blend comedy with life lessons without sounding preachy.

Not Your Usual Feminine Narrative

What truly sets Thaai Kizhavi apart is its portrayal of an older woman as the backbone of the story. Pavunthaayi is not the stereotypical soft-spoken grandmother figure. Instead, she is fierce, practical, and deeply self-respecting. Through her life journey, the film highlights the struggles she endured to raise her children and build her life independently. While others may perceive her as rude or self-centred, Pavunthaayi embodies self-respect and resilience.

“Every woman should learn how to earn money and save it. Money may not buy everything in this world, but for women, it helps you earn respect.”

This dialogue resonates strongly, especially in today’s context, where financial independence remains a crucial pillar of empowerment. Pavunthaayi’s character reinforces the idea that women should not bow to societal pressure but instead strive to earn not just money, but dignity and self-worth.

A Promising Debut Vision

For a debut director, Sivakumar Murugesan demonstrates remarkable clarity in vision. Choosing a bold, women-centric subject for his first film speaks volumes about his storytelling confidence. The scenes flow organically, and the casting choices feel deliberate and effective. With Thaai Kizhavi already becoming a talking point, expectations are building for his next venture, Seyon, which will star Sivakarthikeyan.

A Timely Reminder Ahead of Women’s Day

As the world prepares to celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, 2026, Thaai Kizhavi serves as a powerful reminder to appreciate, celebrate, and respect women, not just for their sacrifices, but for their strength and independence.

More importantly, the film delivers a clear message to women everywhere: education and financial independence are not optional luxuries but necessities. Even if no one stands by you in difficult times, your knowledge, skills, and self-belief will. With laughter, emotion, and a strong social message, Thaai Kizhavi stands tall as a film that entertains while leaving a lasting impact.
