In conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, the ferry service in Penang will be free of charge to all Malaysians for a limited period, providing both convenience and cost relief for travellers.
The free ferry rides will be available on the first and second day of the celebration. The service will cover routes between the Sultan Abdul Halim Terminal (PSAH), and the Raja Tun Uda Terminal (PRTU), two key transit points connecting the island and mainland.
Yeoh Soon Hin, the chairman of the Penang Port Commission (SPPP), said the initiative reflects the commission’s continued commitment, alongside Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB), to ease travel for public especially during peak festive travel periods. This does not just reduce traffic congestion in Penang, but encourages the use of efficient and more sustainable public transportation.
Beyond transportation, this initiative also ties in with the commission’s broader community efforts. In celebration if their 70th anniversary, SPPP will roll out special programmes under the “Kids Go Free Aidilfitri Special” campaign at the Penang Ferry Museum.
As part of the programme, Malaysian children from aged 12 and below will enjoy a free admission to the museum from 23rd March-25th March, offering families an opportunity to explore the cultural and historical significance of Penang’s ferry services.
Yeoh added that the initiative complements ongoing efforts to position the ferry museum as both a learning centre and a heritage attraction, particularly for the young generations. With the increased travel expected during Hari Raya, the ferry service is set to benefit thousands of commuters while promoting a shift towards more sustainable modes of transports.
