As the Hari Raya Holidays approach, Malaysians are being advised to reconsider plans for travel to Thailand in light of a significant fuel shortage affecting the country. Popular destinations like Hat Yai are experiencing notable difficulties in securing petrol.
The fuel crisis is largely attributed to rising oil prices driven by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This has resulted in not just a spike in fuel prices within Thailand, but also in various other countries affected by the global oil market volatility. In response to the crisis, Thai authorities are expected to enforce stricter protocols during the festive season, which may include limitations on petrol purchases for foreign vehicles.

Starting from March 18, 2026, the Thai government has announced a new price hike for fuels, further compounding the situation. Reports indicate that locals are engaging in panic buying, leading to temporary shortages at fuel stations. To manage this, regulations may restrict motorcycle owners to a maximum of 50 baht (approximately RM6) worth of petrol, while cars and vans are set to a cap of 500 baht (about RM60) per vehicle.
Malaysians are encouraged to plan their trips well in advance and consider alternative destinations outside of Thailand to minimize the risk of encountering fuel shortages. As the holiday season nears, it remains crucial for travelers to stay informed and adjust their plans accordingly.
