The Ministry of Education (MOE) is taking a step to reduce teachers workload through initiatives in the Malaysia Education Blueprint (RPM) 2026-2035. The Education Blueprint aims to allow educators focus more on teaching and learning.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the blueprint ensures teachers can dedicate their time to classroom instruction, also known as pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP). The blueprint has the 80:20 policy, which allocates 80 percent of teachers time to PdP-related activities, while limiting non-teaching responsibilities to 20 percent.
According to her, teacher’s well-being has many factors, including workload beyond important duties, working condition, and emotional pressures . She has said that it is important to build a sustainable and supportive education system. Efforts to reduce the burden on teachers has already been in plans since 2023. Among the measures introduced is the appointment of 20,997 volunteers to assist with the administration of the SPM exams, which reduces the strain on teachers during peak assessment time.
In addition, the ministry of education implemented the Malaysia Short-Term Employment Programme (MySTEP) to provide teacher assistance, in helping them manage administrative and classroom support tasks. Also full-time assistants for hostel wardens has also been introduced to make sure that teachers are not overburdened with responsibilities beyond their teaching roles.
These initiatives shows the commitment of the ministry to improve the work life for educators while enhancing the quality of education. By streamlining responsibilities and providing additional support, the blueprint is to create an environment where teachers can focus on giving effective lessons and help with the student development.
