National archer M Khambeswaran has done the nation proud at the Asian Archery Championships in Bangkok, giving fresh hopes for Malaysia in the sport at the upcoming SEA Games.
Juwaidi Mazuki finished on top at the end of the ranking rounds for the men’s individual event with 707 points at the end of 72 arrows, behind him teammate Zulfadhli Ruslan, who finished with 706. Kambeshwaran, who turned 20 this year, garnered 689 points and was ranked 24th, while Syahrizan Jafar was 28th with 680.
As a result of the team effort, Malaysia ranked third in the team event with 2,102 points behind joint leaders India and South Korea.
The SEA Games will begin on the 30th of November. Phillipines will be hosting the biennial regional multi sport event that will feature our Malaysian archery team. The sporting event for archery will be held at Clark Parade Grounds, Mabalacat.
Khambeswaran made headlines earlier this year when he could not participate in the national selection for the World Archery Youth Championships. Instead, the bowman chose to participate in the National Youth Archery Tournament, organised by National Archery Association of Malaysia in April. As a result of Khambeswaran’s efforts, Pulau Pinang raked in two gold medals at the national tournament.
