Toh Puan Uma Sambanthan, wife of the late Tun VT Sambanthan, passed away at about 1.30pm today. She was 90 years old.
Toh Puan Uma was a social worker who was well known for her charity projects. She was an advocate for women’s rights as well. he was one of the founders of the National Council of Women’s Organisations (NCWO) and its president for a brief period.
In her later years, Uma spoke out strongly against the rise of racism and religious chauvinism in Malaysian politics. She leaves behind a daughter, Kunjari.
She was also the chairman and director of the National Land Finance Cooperative Society (NLFC) for 15 years from 1980. She was later elected president of the society in 1995 and 1996.
Toh Puan Uma resided in Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya, with her daughter up until her demise.
Her mortal remains will be cremated at the Sungai Siput Hindu Crematorium at 11 am tomorrow.
It was Toh Puan’s wish that in lieu of floral tributes, donations be made to the Sri Ramakrishna Mission or the Sri Sarada Math.
