“The Moment I Saw Rajini Sir, He Felt Like a Father To Me!” – Nivetha Thomas

Despite being only 24, Nivetha Thomas has already had an 11 year long cinema career, starting off in 2008 with the Malayalam movie Veruthe Oru Bharya as a child artist. Her career has gone from strength to strength, and she has really made her mark in South Indian cinema as a whole, featuring regularly in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam movies in various pivotal roles.

Although acting with big stars is nothing new to her having acted with the likes of Vijay in Jilla and Kamal Haasan in Papanasam, Darbar has been an extremely important project to her.

On the eve of Darbar’s release, Nivetha spoke to the media reflecting on her career and Darbar.

“After Papanasam, I was open to doing good scripts in any language and got plenty of offers in Tamil but nothing excited me and suddenly out of the blue, Ninnu Kori  in Telugu fell into my lap and I got lot of appreciation. I was keen to do a mass film and hence did Jai Lava Kusa and it helped me reach out to the mass audiences in Andhra”, Nivetha says on how she plans out her career. Despite being choosy about her movies, Darbar was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up on, and she herself was very impressed with the chemistry she formed with Rajinikanth, playing the daughter Valli to his lead.

Nivetha describes her experience shooting alongside the superstar with fondness.

“You know something, the first time, I met Rajini sir was when he was in his make-up and immediately I related to him as my dad. We shot together for almost 45 days and I saw him only as the character he played and that too, my dad and it was only on the last day of shoot, did I get out of that mode and click a selfie with him, as I realized that I am with THE Superstar himself. When you play heroine in a big star film the scenes will be clichéd, like songs and romance but in Darbar I was lucky to play his daughter who was always working with him closely. Honestly, it was an emotional moment for me once I realized that the shoot is over,” she said.
