The Covid-19 pandemic and the movement control order (MCO) that resulted from it has been tough on all of us, including our furry friends at Zoo Negara.
Last week, Zoo Negara announced that they need donations to fund their operating costs. The zoo is struggling, as there has been zero ticket sales during the MCO period, and sales are expected to slow tremendously after it is lifted.
Zoo Negara has now opened up a new avenue for donations, via Ticket2u. The public can donate RM25, RM50, RM100, RM200, RM400, RM500, RM700, RM900 or even RM1000 Donations made via Ticket2u is subject to a RM1 processing fee.
Zoo Negara’s initial plea has managed to raise a total of RM70,000. Unfortunately, this is not sufficient to cover operational costs, according to the Malay Mail.
Zoo Negara’s Deputy President, Rosly @ Rahmat Ahmat Lana, said that the amount was donated by individuals in and out of the country. Despite that, he said the amount is not enough to cover the operating costs, which reportedly comes to about RM1 million per month.
He said the zoo is currently surviving on its emergency fund which can only last three months, at most, to pay the contractors who deliver food for the animals.
