Actor Irrfan Khan passed away at the age of 54 today. The Piku star was undergoing treatment for a colon infection at the Kokilaben Dhirubai Ambani hospital in Mumbai when he breathed his last. He had been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018 and had spent several months being treated in United Kingdom.

An official statement from his family, released on Wednesday, read: “”I trust, I have surrendered,” These were the some of the many words that Irrfan expressed in a heart felt note he wrote in 2018 talking about his fight with cancer. A man of few words and an actor of silent expressions with his deep eyes and his memorable actions on screen. It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away,”

“Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him. Surrounded by his love, his family for whom he cared most about, he left for heaven, leaving behind a legacy of his own. We all pray and hope that he is at peace,” the statement read.

The news has sent shockwaves through the entire nation, especially within the Bollywood fraternity. Filmmaker Soojit Sarkar and actor Amitabh Bachchan, both who worked with Irrfan in Piku took to Twitter to condole the actor’s sudden demise.

A few days ago, Irrfan Khan’s mother Saeeda Begum passed away at the age of 95 in Jaipur. Due to the Covid-19 lockdown, Irrfan paid his last respects to his late mother via a video conferencing session.

Irrfan’s last movie was Homi Adajania’s Angrezi Medium. He has also acted in several remarkable films like Maqbool, Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Haider, Piku and Hindi Medium.

The Varnam team extends our heartfelt sympathies to the family and friends of Irrfan Khan.
