Malaysia’s rising jazz singer-songwriter, Dani Komari has launched a one-of-a-kind music video for her song Circles. It captures the essence of ethical fashion and pays homage to Malaysian artists of all abilities.
Directed by Hafreez Amminuddin, who has previously worked with prominent jazz musician Zee Avi, the music video was produced at Life Clothing Malaysia and features Dani in outfits made from upcycled materials.
In the music video, Dani can be seen wearing a white wedding gown from the award-winning sustainable fashion brand, ECO2re by Gina Frias. It features a combination of upcycled materials ranging from the fabric to the embellishments.
Conceptualized and designed by the ECO2re chief designer, Gina Frias, the gown was tailored by the Kelantan-based disabled dressmaker. Mr Rahim Yusof, from Kelantan, who was born without arms but managed to stitch the gown using his two able feet.
The dress was also featured in the Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week.
All the other wardrobe that Dani wore on the music video are also made from upcycled and thrifted materials from designers such as Tarik Jeans, Humcariley, Maz and Ugly Pretty.
For Dani Komari, Circles represents a reality close to her heart — all of us have our ups and downs in life, for life is like a circle. “Circles can mean many things, depending on the listener. But when I was writing this song, I was dealing with changes from living with family to living alone. I had just chosen to become independent.”
As for the music video, the director Hafreez said “From a visual point of view, I wanted to have this persona of a 9 to 5 person working in a clothes recycling factory, where this girl (played by Dani Komari) is well aware that her life is a never-ending cycle keeping her alive (her job) but that doesn’t mean that she isn’t allowed to have a dream that’s out of the norm. Hence, I wanted to emphasize on the scenes where she was all glammed up in her dreams and just dazed in her own world (that’s how the character visions herself out of her circle). What makes the music video meaningful and beautiful is that it revolves around the shape of a circle. We have the song, we have this person stuck in her routine, shot in a recycling factory and even better – the clothes that Dani Komari wore in the video is made from upcycled materials and some are even thrift goods!”
Circles was recorded by her drummer Jerry Lim in his studio in Bangsar in October last year. It was mastered at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell.
Dani has regularly performed at various festivals such as the IP Jazz Festival 2017 (Johor), JB International Arts Festival (Johor) 2017, and also the Publika Jazz Festival (Kuala Lumpur) 2017.
