In light of the MCO school’s closure, two young brothers P. Sacheen, 10, and P. Rovan, eight, utilised their free time by collecting books, toys and stationery for other children in need.
“We had a spring cleaning session with help from our mother a few weeks ago and found a lot of books and toys that other children may enjoy having,”
“We told our parents that we wanted to start a project and collect more items to give away and they were receptive to our idea,” said Sacheen when met at his house in Bandar Putra in Kulai here.
He said they spread the word about their project on social media and received pre-loved books, toys, clothes, and basic school necessities from others.
“Our mother helped us set up a Facebook page so that we could tell more people about our project. Many have come forward to support our initiative by donating items,” he said, adding that some of the donations were from strangers.
He said they had collected nine boxes of books and lots of toys and stationery for the children. Rovan said that he was looking forward to seeing the smiles on other children’s faces when they received the items.
“We spend a few hours every day to arrange the items into small bags or boxes to give away,” he said.
Their mother R. Chitra, 41, said she was proud of her children’s willingness to help those in need. “I was happy when they said they wanted to donate their things to other children. I encouraged them and was supportive. I also helped spread the word to collect more items,” she said.
Chitra said she had identified several families who would benefit from the donations. “We will distribute the items next week and hope to reach out to about 30 children in the Kulai area,” she said.
