Unilever has rebranded its best-selling product in India, Fair and Lovely to Glow and Lovely. In light of the change, they will also be re-branding the male’s version to Glow and Handsome.
The re-branded products of Unilever will be on store shelves in the coming months. The terms ‘fair’, ‘whitening’, and ‘lightening’, will also be removed from packaging and marketing materials, the company has said.
Fair and Lovely was one of India’s most popular skincare products and became the talk of the town when the cream was promoted to create instant fairness, feeding the citizens with the ugly lie that fairness is the definition of beauty and colour was the measurement to look lovely.
This racial stereotype lasted long until massive protests from film stars, social media influencers, and netizens spurned the product for being fake. Finally, it resulted in not only Unilever but also other brands like Johnson Johnson and Loreal to take down the word ‘fair’ from their respective products.
