Thieves struck into an ancient temple in Negeri Sembilan here carting away a steel offering box on Thursday. They entered the Sri Maha Mariamman Temple in the so-called factory division of the Tanah Merah plantation in Port Dickson.
The temple priests were present in the sanctum when the theft took place, but they were engrossed in performing the morning pooja (prayers). They were shocked to see the offering box missing and informed the temple officials about the theft.
Temple president R. Maniarasu said the offering box was only opened once every year to collect offerings for the annual temple festival. He estimated that the thieves might have carted away about RM2,000 worth of cash in the box.
