Malaysia has reported 862 new Covid-19 cases today as revealed by the Ministry of Health (MoH). Presently, there are 3 deaths, 860 local cases, 7681 active cases and 634 recoveries.

This count shows that Covid-19 cases in the country have yet to see a significant drop. Sadly, active cases have increased by 225. However, it is good to note that there have been 179 recoveries.

It was reported yesterday (Monday, 19th October), that 49 employees from Proton Holdings Bhd had tested positive for Covid-19. This came just a mere four days after Proton in a statement on 15th October said that an employee from its research and development department (R&D) had tested positive for the virus.

All 49 employees are from Proton’s engineering division in Shah Alam. For the time being, Proton has required all non-essential staff employed inside the Shah Alam facility to operate from home as a precautionary measure.

According to a Bernama report, Langkawi District Health Officer Dr. Mansor Ismail said there have been no Covid-19 cases reported in Langkawi since the last patient seeking medical care at Sultanah Maliha Hospital was permitted to leave on Tuesday (13th October). On that note, the Langkawi district has since been declared a green zone.

The Islamic Religious Department of Selangor (Jais) would only allow Friday prayers and marriage ceremonies to be conducted in green zones following the recent rise in Covid-19 cases in the state. Thus, in a statement yesterday, Jais director Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said only the Sabak Bernam district had been declared a green zone.

Meanwhile, the field hospital built in Tawau, Sabah by the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) with a government allocation of RM500,000 has started operating today and is set to receive 20 patients. Hospital Commander Colonel Dr. Shamsul Bahary Muhamad said he is expecting 30 to 50 percent of patients in its first week of service.

“This hospital has 100 beds and we will continue to accommodate patients until we have surpassed the full capacity,” he told reporters. According to him, the field hospital located in the Badminton courts of the Tawau Sports Complex provided a range of services, including general medical services, orthopedics and health care for women and children.

On top of that, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Raja Lope Nor Rashid in Tanjung Piandang, Parit Buntar, is the fifth school in Perak ordered to close for a week beginning today due to a positive Covid-19 case. Perak Education Director Dr Mohd Suhaimi Mohamed Ali said the school will be reopened on 27th October.

Here are the list of updated places affected by Covid-19;

  1. Masjid Kampung Paka 2, Ranau, Sabah
  2. Masjid Pekan Renau, Ranau, Sabah Masjid Pekan Renau
  3. BSP21 Condominium, Bandar Saujana Putra, Selangor
  4. LakeFront Residences, Cyberjaya, Selangor
  5. Desa Idaman, Puchong Prima, Selangor
  6. Tropicana Avenue, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
  7. Seasons Garden Residences, Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur
  8. SMK Pantai, Labuan
  9. SMK Raja Lope Nor Rashid, Parit Buntar, Perak

During yesterday’s live press conference, Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that the government is considering the enforcement of the enhanced movement control order (EMCO) in Selangor due to the rise of Covid-19 cases there.

Should the EMCO be implemented, everyone will have to stay locked at home. Economic activities will be on hold and there would be a greater unemployment problem in the country. There are certainly many issues that have to be fully considered by the government before implementing the EMCO. Thus, we need to follow the SOPs set by the government and wait for further instructions to act accordingly.

Stay safe, always wear a MASK when you’re out, sanitise and practice safe social distancing. Let’s break the chain of Covid-19 together!
