Covid-19 has left many folks hopeless, particularly those who rely solely on their business and those who are unemployed or have lost their jobs and source of income.
Mariamma or Mary is a 45-year-old mother who is Currently unemployed and is the sole breadwinner of her family.
The determined mother who lost her job as a cleaning lady at an office sells nasi lemak and bihun goreng around the streets of Taman Desa at 6:30am with a single trolley.
In order to get by the day, Mary wakes up about 3am and starts preparing 40 packets of nasi lemak and 10 packets of bihun goreng, completing her task at 5.30am.
After placing all her nasi lemak and bihun goreng packets in her reliable trolley, she says a short prayer and leaves home to start her day.
She lives on the fourth floor of her apartment, which is not built with a lift, forcing her to carry the load down eight flight of stairs.
Being a woman, she has no choice but to risk her safety everyday in order to go about her business, just to make ends meet.
Faced with all these hardships, on a good day, she can earn up to RM80 and hopes to save enough to open up her very own food stall someday.
In the evening, though, she would spare a little time with her family. Apart from that, being a mother is no joke, the job is a never ending one with the task of cooking and cleaning for their families, even after long hours of work. Mary is no exception.
Mary, who earns less than RM100 a day, has so much to do. From waking up early in the morning to ascending eight stairs. This woman comes home with a swollen and sore feet.
Her story is the one of many out there. Bringing their stories to light can make many of us rethink about life and the reason we should be grateful for the blessings god has bestowed upon us. Thousands have it worse.
