With a heavy heart I pen this article while remembering in sadness the fate of a pack of dogs from a dog shelter who died as a result of a tragic flood in Mambau, Seremban.
This heavy rain even caused flash flooding in at areas in Seremban, affecting at least 450 residents.
The dog shelter, Furrykids Safehaven, reported that 54 of the 1,800 dogs were dead and several more were missing.
Sathiavany Madhavan, the association ‘s secretary, said the water had begun to rise to the shelter at 3:30am, following a strong torrential rain.
The workers, however, freed as many dogs as they could, so that they could protect themselves by heading to higher ground because the flood waters were 6 feet high.
Sathiavany said, “Fortunately, many of the dogs managed to climb the roof of the shelter and waited there, but many others panicked and were washed away by the high-flowing waters.
Imagine how those dogs survived this terrifying turmoil. In fact, the dog shelter as well as the home of the workers have been severely affected by the flood.
They’ve done their best and they’re hoping for your kind cooperation in this difficult time.
Sathiavany said they had planned to keep the remaining dogs in the shelter for at least two weeks before moving to another venue.
“We raised funds with an aim of RM350,000 to create a proper shelter at another rented location in Kuala Sawah, Seremban, which is currently being built.
“However, because of this incident, we asked the contractor to speed up work in order for the dogs to be transferred there first. Sadly, the expenses had skyrocketed to another RM100,000, “she said, adding that only RM240,000 has been collected so far.
She requested donations for the building fund, as well as for emergency recovery efforts.
Donations may be sent to PERSATUAN HAIWAN TERBIAR FURRYKIDS SAFEHAVEN via the shelter’s CIMB bank account number 8603905676/8009081090 or Sathiavany at +60126012030.
Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Lend a helping hand to this shelter while you can.
