Besides the Covid-19 pandemic, there is also a diabetes problem that we need to be aware of. Well, if you think that Covid-19 is fatal, diabetes can be life threatening too!

Findings from the National Health and Morbidity Survey found that an estimated one in two Malaysians are unaware that they are diabetic.

Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah was reported as saying in a news report that about 18% of Malaysians aged 18 and above had diabetes; noting that this was an increase from 11.2% in 2011 and 13.4% in 2015.

ThE World Diabetes Day (14th November 2020) Fell at the height of the pandemic, yet it does not make diabetes less serious, But all the more important to keep  Abreast.

Diabetes has two types: type 1 and type 2. Even though they differ in condition, they both are considered severe. There are also several rare forms of diabetes. The common ground in all forms of diabetes, however is that they all cause too much glucose in the blood.

And yet we all need glucose because it gives us energy on a whole regular basis. Glucose is produced in our body when we consume carbohydrates which break down and are released into our blood system.

Meanwhile, we also require a hormone called insulin that our pancreas generates. This hormone has a role to play in allowing glucose in our blood to reach our cells to fuel our bodies.

Google

So if you have diabetes, the process where glucose reaches the cell will not function. When you have type 1 diabetes, your body cannot produce any insulin at all. But, when you have type 2 diabetes, insulin will either not work effectively or insufficient to function.

However, both Can cause glucose to not reach the cells, so it accumulates in our blood, which might lead to Various health Issues.

That’s when one will start to experience symptoms of diabetes, they are;

Urinating a lot

Feeling very thirsty

Exhaustion

Losing weight

Prone to infections

Slow wound healing

Over a period of time, excessive glucose levels will cause harm to your heart, eyes, feet, and kidneys. These are considered to be complications of diabetes.

But with the right medication and timely care, people with diabetes will live a long, healthy life

Knowing the symptoms and getting yourself checked, and even keeping to a few strict guidelines, will certainly not lead to more severe health problems.

Picking the right diet, exercising regularly, and taking the right prescription is good enough already To keep one’s diabetes at bay

Diabetes is not something to be scared of if one maintains a healthy lifestyle. We all have stressful lives and many living with diabetes know this fully well, hence those with diabetes have a responsibility to look after themselves well and never take their condition for granted.

The importance of those yearly health screenings are so vital

Please do not take this matter for granted and make sure you book that yearly appointment with your doctor. Apart from that, it is also advisable to get checked on your BMI status, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol level on a regular basis.
