Think that you lead a balanced lifestyle? Aside from often veering off the road, most of us think that whenever we manage to fit in, we do a decent job on keeping fit with healthy (or at least OK) food habits and physical activity. But is that all it takes to be healthy? Ponder again.

Dr. R. Shalini Devi, who once weighed at 118 kg, set an outstanding precedent for Malaysian women struggling to lose weight. Today she weighs 57kg and also won ‘Mrs Saree Malaysia’ title in 2019. The doctor who was on the Yo-yo diet managed to successfully achieve her ideal weight.

In 2010, Dr. Shalini was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, hypothyroidism and polycystic ovary syndrome. For two years, she was on medicine and tried several diets and fitness regimes, but finding it impossible to decrease her weight. Her life changed in 2011 when she designed her own fitness regime that focused 80% on diet and 20% on exercise. In less than six months, she lost 44kgs.

Dr. Shalini has started a few Zumba classes to promote fitness and health. Zumba has been one of the most enjoyable and flexible exercise regime for a while now. While most Zumba requires moves with high impact such as bouncing and spinning, it can be changed to suit one’s specifications.

She was encouraged to launch an online consultation and personal fitness outfit with more than 2,000 trainees from 11 countries because of their weight loss performance (including Singapore, Canada, China, Saudi Arabia and India).

It sounds more like a dance party than a workout to groove to the rhythms of salsa, flamenco, and merengue music, which is precisely what makes Zumba so famous.
