Rapid KL is one of the main public transportation system in Malaysia. Rapid KL‘s transportation services varies from bus rides, to LRT, MRT and even ferries.
In conjunction to a noteworthy day in the month of December celebrating the disabled communities in the world, Rapid KL has intended to offer free of charge service to them this coming weekend, 5th and 6th December 2020.
This announcement was made by Rapid KL on their official Facebook page;
According to Rapid KL;
Prior to boarding the public transport, the disabled personnel would have to show their official OKU card provided by the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Welfare. The free ride also includes for the helper that comes along with the OKU during their travels.
OKU is defined as those with long-term physical, emotional, intellectual or sensory impairments that can inhibit their active and effective involvement in society by dealing with different health related issues.
In Malaysia, there are as much as 197,519 people with various types of disabilities.
The free service offered by Rapid KL is definitely a noble act in appreciating the disabled community whom still use public transport to travel.
This service includes for all of the operating rail services of Rapid KL, which are Ampang/Sri Petaling Route LRT, MRT and Monorel Route and the Kelana Jaya/Gombak LRT Route.
Rapid KL also announced that;
In conjunction with the OKU Day celebration, Infrastructure recorded a high appreciation to the ministry especially the OKU Development Department for all their hard work by focusing on the well-being of the lives of this special group of people
The OKU community, as Malaysians, have made a major contribution to the national development process or ‘nation-building’ to create a world-class culture that cares about all aspects of life to make Malaysia an example in the eyes of the world.
Prasarana will continue to work closely with the Ministry in order to achieve these aspirations, especially to ensure that the well-being of the OKU people in the country continues to be prioritised.
The authorities of Rapid KL further stated that;
Infrastructure is definitely sensitive to the needs of the OKU group; and will continue to cooperate with the Ministry to bring comfort to the OKU in using our services. Out of this special promotional period, Prasarana is definitely offering a 50 percent discount for OKU people using their services.
Infrastructure has also initiated monorail station upgrade works for OKU services, though MRT and train stations are inevitably designed for comfortable use for the disabled. The system also includes group-friendly buses for all bus stops in the country.
Rapid KL also affirmed that all these operating facilities, including OKU-friendly trains and buses, have been designed and upgraded by Prasarana.
The STAR LRT service, now known as Ampang Route LRT, was not OKU friendly when it began operating in 1996 until Prasarana revamped all the route stations in 2012 with elevator facilities and platform areas enhanced to enable wheelchair movement in and out of the train.
This is indeed a great move by Prasarana in providing a friendly and comfortable public transport service for all the special folks in Malaysia, giving importance to their well being.
