Social work does not always mean monetary assistance, offering food to people who are less fortunate is also considered to be one of the most generous and gracious form of aid especially in such miserable times.

The owner of Big Boss Banana Leaf Restaurant, M. Moganasundram, 37, noticed the existing crisis brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic and selflessly distributes 100 packs of rice and side dishes every day until 26th January, the last day of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

“Sometimes, Moganasundram calls me to his restaurant, where he gives me free food. He knows I live alone and I am poor,” said Goh Cheng Weng, 65.

“If the MCO is extended, we will continue to do so. In fact, we’ve been doing this since the MCO was first enforced to relieve the burden of those impacted by the pandemic,” he said when Bernama met him at his restaurant in Jalan Ooi Kar Seng here on Monday.

He normally changes the side dishes menu every day. The menu includes white rice, egg sambal, fried fish, chicken, vegetables and gravy,” he said.

In his restaurant, Moganasundram employs 12 workers who prepare food from 3pm to 5pm and then pack it for distribution at 6pm. The workers would set aside 10 kg of rice, 100 fish, 100 eggs, 100 pieces of chicken and vegetables each day for the free food distribution.

He believes that doing good to fellow human beings is a priority rather than merely attaining monetary gain, as thousands struggle form poverty on a daily basis.

Housewife, D. Puspamalar, 51, said that Moganasundram’s initiative should be praised because there are many unfortunate people who are in dire need of all the help they could get.

“This effort should continue because many people are unable to work and have no income. They need some help,” she said.
