Senior Minister (Security) Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob has concluded the areas within the Klang Valley that will be enforced with the Enhanced Movement Control Order (EMCO). The stricter social restrictions aimed at containing a surge in COVID-19 cases in Klang Valley areas will begin from 3rd July till 16th July.

According to the ministry, Selangor posted the highest number by state with 2,885 new infections today, followed by Kuala Lumpur (998), Negeri Sembilan (692), and Sarawak (544). Perhaps, this decision was made upon the continuous rise of COVID cases in Klang Valley.

So, how will the EMCO work this time?

Residents are subject to stringent SOPs as a result of the implementation of the EMCO; below are some of the tightened SOP’s that have been laid down by the government:

  • Targeted screening tests will be conducted by the Health Ministry in selected affected areas.
  • Roads in the affected areas will be closed and guarded by police officers.
  • Residents are only permitted to leave their homes in an emergency or to purchase essentials.
  • Within a 10-kilometre radius of their homes, only ONE individual from each family is allowed to go out and buy basic necessities.
  • After 8 pm, no movement outside the residential area is permitted unless in an emergency or with authorisation from the PDRM.
  • From 8 am to 8 pm, only essential services (restaurants, grocery stores, and daily essentials retailers) are permitted to operate.
  • Sports, social, recreational, and cultural pursuits are all forbidden.

After a week of friction with the federal government over vaccine availability in Selangor, the state has initiated its own vaccination program. The Selangor Vaccine Programme (Selvax) is Malaysia’s first and only independent vaccination program.

According to Amirudin Shari, who inaugurated Selvax on Wednesday (30th June), this programme is mainly for individuals who are working in the industrial sector, which has been the state’s main contributor of COVID-19 cases .
