Seremban Indian Couple Arrested For Suicide ‘Role Play’

For others, it might not be a big deal: But this is not the right way to send a message!

A couple has been detained in connection with a video that went viral on social media showing a family allegedly consuming poison. Recently, a video has emerged on Facebook where a married couple hailing from Seremban depict drinking poison along with their nine month old baby boy dubbed as a suicide ‘role play.’

For others, it might not be a big deal: But this is not the right way to send a message!

In the 16-minute-and-three-seconds video, a man is seen expressing his dissatisfaction with government officials’ response to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as how the issue is causing people stress and leading them to depression.

Reuben George, and his wife, 29 are both facing charges in relation to publishing content that can potentially cause public fear. The sensitive content has created outrage on social media, followed by backlashes after the video was circulated online on 12th July.

The video shows three members of a family drinking (allegedly) poison due to depression, and the man also questioned the government’s efforts in dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also urged the government to take drastic actions to tackle the issue, which is causing stress and depression among the public, which has contributed to high suicide rates in Malaysia in just months.

My personal view is, we have to be very mindful and careful on what we’re sharing on social media because you never know when something could come back not only to ruin your life, but those who have been influenced by your postings. Even the smallest mistakes, which may seem fine at the time, can have terrible consequences when you least expect them.

According to Seremban district police chief ACP Mohd Said Ibrahim, George said that he had lost his job due to the pandemic and was now relying on e-hailing for an income.

The case is currently under investigation for “publishing content that may cause public fear and alarm” under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code, “causing physical and emotional distress to a child” under Section 31(1) of the Child Act, and “misusing network facilities” under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

On the other end, Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Commissioner, Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan stated that his department had received the information on the video that was posted on Reuben George’s Facebook page and that the incident had been taken into serious effect.
