Tamil School Students Ace It At World Youth Invention and Innovation Award

These multi-talented ingenious inventions will blow your mind!

Tamil schools in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, and Penang bagged two gold, four silver, and six bronze awards at an international innovation festival. Another impressive achievement by our young minds!

The Indonesian Young Scientists Association (IYSA) in collaboration with Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta hosted the World Youth Invention and Innovation Award (WYIIA) from 16 July to 21 August.

This event aims to give them the opportunity to show off their work and projects, as well as to improve the quality and types of innovative projects that have contributed to the world’s development.

Based on a Makkal Osai report, the students were trained for about three months, according to trainers R. Shanmuganathan and Surendran Gobalakrishnan.

They added that the 47 students from SJK (T) Permatang Tinggi, SJK (T) Mak Mandin, SJK (T) Taman Melawati, SJK (T) Simpang Lima, and SJK (T) Castlefield excelled with their innovations and presentations despite competing against 377 teams from 35 countries.

On 18 August, skilled children aged 8 to 11 presented their inventions online via Zoom, and the results delighted the students’ teachers. The gold, silver, and bronze medalists, as well as their inventions, are listed below.

GOLD MEDAL

SJKT Taman Melawati  – ‘My soil, my plant’

SJKT Ladang Highlands – ‘Toxic air detector and alert’

SILVER MEDAL

SJKT Permatang Tinggi – a self-boosting bio-degradable pot

SJKT Simpang Lima – is an organic face mask that purifies the air that is breathed in by the user.

SJKT Ladang Highlands – a mobile rainwater harvest

SJKT Castlefield –  a ‘COVID-19 shopping mall crowd control system’ that restricts the number of people who can enter a location at any given time.

BRONZE MEDAL

SJKT Mak Mandin – Fire lock system

SJKT Castlefield – Home light auto off

SJKT Ladang Highlands – Natural pandan cockroach repellent

SJKT Ladang Highlands – Non-alcoholic hand sanitiser

SJKT Padang Highlands – Vermicompost bin

SJKT Permatang Tinggi – Rain detector and alert system
