Almost every month in the Tamil calendar, a significant auspicious day is always present, and spiritual practises such as Puja and fasting will take place.

This month, which is the sixth month in the Tamil calendar, is known as Purattasi month, and it is sacred to the Vaishnavites of South India, being the month in which Lord Vishnu descended to earth.

But, more than the month of Purattasi itself, the Saturdays that fall in the month of Purattasi are considered especially sacred and ideal for thanking Lord Perumal or Balaji for maintaining the universe during the Kali Yuga.

Since Saturdays in the month of Purattasi are considered holy, all Saturdays in the month of Purattasi, devotees observe strict Vrat and offer special prayers and rituals to Lord Vishnu. This is because, Vishnu, the God of Wealth has unique power on these Saturdays and is particularly effective in minimising negative effects from Saturn.

Some Hindu families may even perform a homam to bring them abundant wealth and success in life. The following are common types of homams that can take place during this month.

Vishnu Sahasranama Parayanam & Archana

Chanting Lord Vishnu’s one thousand names is so auspicious that it provides both material and spiritual benefits. It activates the Sahasrara Chakra, bestows good fortune, and aids in the achievement of life’s professional and personal goals.

Narayana Upanishad Parayanam

The Upanishad depicts Lord Narayana as the creator and explains the spiritual significance of the mantra ‘Aum Namo Narayanaya.’

Vishnu Suktha Japam & Parayanam

A very powerful mantra for Moksha, Enlightenment, and overall well-being. Sri Devi Bhu Devi Samedha Srivari Venkatachalapathy Shanthi Homam invokes Lord Balaji’s powers, as well as his consorts Sridevi and Bhudevi. Lord Balaji of Tirumala came to earth to wipe away Kaliyuga’s hardships and to protect devotees from adversity. The Lord, along with his consorts, ensures that his disciples who worship him live in peace, prosperity, and unity.
