I am confident that none of the films listed below will ever bore you because they were all entertaining blockbusters even back then.
Here are the 90s Tamil classics on Netflix that are worth your weekend binge!
Avvai Shanmughi (1996)
Avvai Shanmughi received rave reviews and was a box office success. The film was inspired by the American film Mrs Doubtfire and was remade in Hindi as Chachi 420. The multitalented Kamal Hassan plays the female role of Avvai Shanmughi, and it was a whole level of comedy-drama at the time. This film stars well-known actors such as Meena, Gemini Ganesan, Nagesh, Nassar, and Manivannan.

Bombay (1995)
Mani Ratnam’s masterpiece, starring Arvind Swami and Manisha Koirala in the lead, is a romantic drama. But, more than the love between the lead characters in the film, this film brings to light some disturbing truth. The film follows an inter-religious family in Bombay before and during the Bombay riots, which occurred between December 1992 and January 1993 after the demolition of the Babri Masjid which sparked religious strife between Hindu and Muslim communities. This human relationship drama set against the backdrop of Indian politics is a must-watch if you haven’t already.

Jeans (1998)
Another romantic film on the list, but a fun fact about the title: Shankar had considered the title Genes because the film featured Prashanth and Nasser in dual roles, and he added, “birth of twins is governed by the behaviour of genes.” Jeans is a family-friendly film with no violence or intimate scenes. However, keep in mind that the film is nearly 3 hours long, but it is definitely worth watching. As a result, it will be a mellow story to watch in order to feel relaxed.

Minsara Kanavu (1997)
Minsara Kanavu, which translates to “electric dream,” is a musical romantic drama starring Arvind Swami, Kajol, and Prabhu Deva. The majority of the film’s song tracks are still regarded as very famous and have received numerous awards solely because of the film’s soundtrack, particularly the song “Vennilave Vennilave.” In contrast to the previous films on the list, this one received a mixed-to-positive response from critics.
