Everyone Loves Enga Ammayi’s Sukku Malli Coffee More Than Anything Else

We can all relate to the idea of childhood nostalgia, especially when it comes to our unique coffee cravings. Grandma’s time-honored coffee is sure to give you a case of the warm and fuzzies. Written on worn scrap paper and passed down from one generation to the next, grandma’s exquisite recipes are truly irreplaceable. 

Born and bred in Kampung Columbia, Perak, Sinnamah or popularly known as Ammayi is in the limelight among coffee lovers.

The 79-year-old Enga Ammayi’s Sukku Malli coffee is a home-based business that sells handmade coffee which is classic, nutritious, and 100 percent organic. The words ‘sukku’ and ‘malli’ denote dried ginger and coriander seed, respectively. Sukku malli coffee is a herbal infusion with a myriad of health benefits. 

  • Body heat is usually provided by consuming dry ginger powder. As a result, it protects the body against cough and cold throughout the cold season. 
  • It also aids with weight loss. 
  • Helpful for difficulties like gas and acidity. 
  • Improves one’s digestion. 
  • Helps improve the skin tone and texture whilst helps get rid of rashes and wrinkles. 
  • The spices assist to cleanse the blood and promote proper blood circulation in the body.
  • They also aid to relieve bone and joint pain and tension in the body and mind.

Ammayi began cooking when she was just 12 years old, following her mother’s traditional recipe from Southern India, who was also a first-generation Indian in then Malaya. She loves cooking with her own organic vegetables that she grows by herself at home.

Despite being a great cook, she has become the biggest inspiration for those who know her. She’s turning 80 next year and is still going strong. Her desire is that the upcoming generation know and practice traditions that have been in existence for centuries.

According to Siakap Keli, additionally Ammayi also sells traditional pottu or black bindi for newborn babies. The major component in this traditional pottu is the vasambu pottu, commonly known as the sweet flag. Our ancestors have been following this tradition as black bindi has been said to keep bad energy away from newborns. It also has a cooling effect on the infant’s skin.
