Hailing from Segambut, the 21-year-old tutor took part in Rakan Tutor’s Swim-a-Thon Fundraiser and continuously swam for 21.2 kilometers in 12 hours, which surpassed his expectations based on his prior achievements. His future ambitions, fueled by his success, include a 16-kilometer swim around Pulau Perhentian and a 19.7-kilometer swim to Rottnest Island near Perth. For each lap completed, he pledged an RM10 donation to the initiative.

This talented student and #everydaymalaysian is motivated to goodwill and has organised a fundraiser for a cause he truly cares about to commemorate his graduation and birthday which falls on 11th September.

“The fundraising idea was a combo of three things; Teaching which I have been doing a lot, Rakan tutoring and then there was swimming. Because of the pandemic, I haven’t had the opportunity to do long-distance swimming that much,” said Harish.

“You don’t have to be a part of a gigantic effort to raise funds for a cause – anyone and everyone in their own capacity can contribute and Harish was truly a show of that. Samantha Lee,” Rakan Tutor, Marketing Wizard.

Known as an accomplished swimmer who has previously competed in Open Water Swimming Competitions with his father, he had intended to swim for 24 hours at first. After taking into consideration logistics, dietary requirements, and training requirements, the timeframe was reduced to a shorter one which was 12 hours. In comparison to his previous record of 4km in Malaysian Open Water Swimming, the 12-hour swim-a-thon is a massive endeavor.

Harish was lured to Rakan Tutor, an non-governmental organisation (NGO) that effectively prevents learning loss via one-on-one tutoring with underprivileged kids. He was also well aware that the outbreak had set many students back, especially those who were preparing for major exams or were about to begin higher education at university level.

“I feel like making a difference doesn’t have to be so big and it is possible. We can all do it – use our own privileges and strengths to impact the world in a really good way,” says Harish.

Rakan Tutor is a Malaysian non-profit organisation that provides free one-on-one tutoring to underprivileged secondary school students. Their primary goal is to provide them the skills and confidence that they need to enhance their academic performance and develop drive to reach their full potential.
