We all know that Indian festivals are not perfect without sweets. While Deepavali is known as the festival of lights, it is also a time to enjoy sweet treats such as laddoos, jalebis, coconut candy and gulab jamun. It’s great if you have controlled the intake of sugar this year, but most of them seem to be struggling to keep their hands off from the delicious, good looking Indian sweets. We tend to binge eat the sugary delicacies around this time of the year, no matter how carefully we prepare. This is why you need a Deepavali Detox.

According to researchers, sugar can be addictive as cocaine. An overconsumption of sugar can have a lot of short-term and long-term health consequences, including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. We have some quick and easy detox tips that can help you get rid of all the sweet treats you ate during the Diwali celebration.

Clean your refrigerator
The first thing you should do is to eliminate all sorts of sweets from your diet (added, refined, artificial, or natural). Make sure you don’t have any sugary treats in your fridge. Additive sugar sources such as soda, bread, pasta, and other packaged meals should also be avoided.

Drink plenty of water
Water is necessary all year, but it is especially crucial after a sugar binge. Water helps in the removal of toxins from the body via urine and bowel motions. You may add lemon slices, cucumber slices, or unsweetened herbal tea to water for added benefits and flavour.

Increase the intake of greens
Increase your intake of green vegetables such as broccoli, green beans, and spinach in your daily meal. They will not only assist to alkalinize your body (lower inflammation) but they will also give you nutrients such as Vitamins K, C, and A, as well as satisfying fibre.

Eat lots of healthy fat
Do you know that healthy fats will help you reduce your cravings for sugary foods? Healthy fats sound extravagant but you can find that in avocados, unsweetened coconut products, nuts and butter. For each meal, you need to consume 1-2 tablespoons of these healthy fats.

Take more fruits instead of sugar
If you have a propensity for eating sweets after meals, consider substituting it with fresh fruits. The fruit has natural sugars as well, but because of the other minerals and fibre in it, they are taken slowly into your system. Berries, which are high in antioxidants and low in sugar, are excellent alternatives to desserts.

Protein is crucial
When you’re taking a sugar detox, protein is extremely crucial. To keep yourself full and prevent sugar cravings, aim for 30 grammes of protein at breakfast. When detoxing from sugar, you should also consume more complex carbohydrates such as sweet potato and butternut squash.

Meals should not be skipped
Fasting might add to the stress that your body is currently experiencing while retraining your body to quit craving for sweets. Furthermore, missing meals causes a dip in blood sugar, which might boost cravings for sweets and carbs.

Focus on nutritious filled meals, protein, and anti-inflammatory fats when on a sugar detox diet, and drink lots of water.
