Discrimination of the lower caste in India has always been a problem for centuries. Till current times, the trampling of human rights involving those of the lower caste including those belonging to tribal clans by the upper casts is a constant battle. Suriya’s most recent film, ‘Jai Bhim’ has become the talk of the town due to its phenomenal success in championing the rights of the Irular tribe who have been marginalised by civilization for decades.
‘Jai Bhim’ tales about a pregnant lady Sengeni from the Irular tribe who is fighting for justice after her husband Rajakannu was falsely accused and died in prison. Suriya plays Chandru, the lawyer who accepts the case. The narrative is based on true events, with a few Hollywood flourishes.
Following the heart-wrenching story, Raghava Lawrence, an actor-director has announced that he will be gifting the real-life wife of character Rajakannu a house. The blockbuster ‘Jai Bhim,’ has not only made huge waves in Tamil Nadu cinema for its stellar performance by the cast and crucial storyline, but also for raising arguments about casteism, police brutality, and human rights. Most importantly, the video has placed attention on the Irular tribes who are very much still discriminated against by their fellow countrymen.
T.G. Gnanavel, the filmmaker of ‘Jai Bhim,’ has raised awareness of these marginalised tribal people throughout India and worldwide by broadcasting it on Amazon Prime Video. Parvathi’s tragic situation has impacted everyone. Her depiction of the brutality and horrific misery she witnessed greatly exceeds what is seen in the film.
Raghava Lawrence has conveyed his deep gratitude to Surya, Jyotika, and director Gnanavell for turning a tragic tragedy that occurred 28 years ago into a masterpiece that has become the buzz of Tamil Nadu today.
